Drivers are being warned about disruption in Stafford after sinkholes affected two roads in the town.

Newport Road is currently closed one-way from the Tesco side towards Bridge Street and Queensway Island, following a sinkhole which appeared on Wednesday 24 June. The affected section is just after Domino’s, close to Top of the World.
Traffic travelling from Queensway Island towards Tesco can still get through, but only one lane is open. The restriction is causing heavy delays, especially during busier periods, and drivers are being advised to avoid the area where possible.
There have also been reports of motorists ignoring the closure signs and then having to turn around near the affected section. Drivers should follow the signs in place and use an alternative route.
The work on Newport Road is being carried out by Severn Trent Water. It is not yet clear how long the closure will remain in place.
The closure is also likely to affect bus passengers. The 101 service is unlikely to call at the stop outside Primark while the work is taking place, so passengers may be better using the railway station or bus station instead.
The bus stops outside The Sun Inn are also out of service while the work continues.
A second sinkhole has also affected Eccleshall Road. According to one.network, highway signage and digdown investigation works have been taking place at the junction of Izaak Walton Street with Eccleshall Road after a sinkhole appeared in the carriageway.

The Eccleshall Road issue started in early June, according to one.network. The work there is being carried out by Staffordshire County Council.
