Heritage railway events taking place near Stafford this weekend

Two heritage railway events are taking place within driving distance of Stafford this weekend, with steam, diesel, electric locomotives and vintage vehicles on display.

Amerton Railway is holding its Road and Rail Weekend on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 June. The event will feature an intensive service of passenger and freight trains, with a wide range of steam, diesel and electric locomotives running throughout the day.

Trains will run from 11am until around 5pm on both days. Gates open at 8am, giving visitors the chance to see volunteers lighting up steam engines, cleaning locomotives and preparing them for the day ahead.

The event will also include shed tours, where visitors can see locomotives currently being maintained by the railway’s volunteer team. The field, yard and picnic area will also be open, giving people the chance to explore the site and take photos of trains in the countryside setting.

A vintage vehicle and stationary engine display will also form part of the weekend. Vehicle exhibitors are being invited to attend, with Amerton Railway saying unusual vehicles are welcome as long as they can be brought to the railway safely.

There will also be a free heritage bus running from Stafford Railway Station to Amerton Railway throughout Saturday 27 June. This gives visitors the option to travel to the event from Stafford without needing to drive.

The weekend also coincides with Motor Rail Mania at Apedale Valley Light Railway, near Newcastle-under-Lyme. That event celebrates 110 years since the first Motor Rail locomotive was created in 1916.

Apedale Valley Light Railway will have resident and visiting locomotives running across the weekend, with trains operating from 11.30am to 4pm.

Amerton Railway has encouraged visitors to support both heritage railways, with the two sites around 39 minutes apart by car.

Food will be available on site at Amerton Railway across the weekend from Amerton Farm.
