Ancient High House
48 Greengate St, Stafford ST16 2JA, UK

About
Standing proudly on Greengate Street, the Ancient High House is perhaps the most iconic and beloved building in Stafford's town centre. Built in 1595, this magnificent structure is the largest surviving timber-framed Tudor town house in the whole of England, and it has watched over the town for more than four centuries.
Its leaning walls and creaking floors are steeped in history. The house famously hosted King Charles I in 1642 during the English Civil War, and its rooms have been home to mayors, business owners, and families throughout the centuries.
Today, the house is a fascinating and atmospheric free museum. As you wander through the building, you'll discover that each room has been decorated to reflect a different period of its rich history, from its Tudor origins and a grand Georgian bedroom to a Victorian-era shop. The house has also gained a well-earned reputation as one of Stafford's most haunted buildings, with tales of ghostly children and mysterious figures adding to its incredible character.
A visit to the Ancient High House is a must for history lovers, architecture fans, and anyone looking for a genuine glimpse into Stafford's incredible past.
